Five native ecosystems are represented in the Kaua‘i watershed.  The largest and most intact ecosystem is the montane wet forest, which captures the majority of the rainfall and contains the majority of Kaua‘i's endemic species.

Much of the lowland wet forests and mesic forests have been either converted to alien dominated forests or agriculture and development.  However, what remains of these forests are essential to maintaining the island's biodiversity and hydrologic function.
